Pretending?
Do you ever pretend you understand someone because your confusion and their repeating themselves is beginning to get awkward? How much awkwardness can you tolerate before you cave in and act like you understand?

Yes. In fact, when I go to India that is at least 50% of all conversations. The worst is when you pretend like you understand someone, then they realize what you are doing, but to be polite they pretend they think you are understanding, and then you realize they are doing that, but neither one of you is willing to admit it. That has happened to me before.
ReplyDeleteThe language barrier is definitely one of the biggest causes of this phenomenon- this includes the language my two year old uses. The worst is when you realize you just acknowledged you understood something that requires some kind of action or further comment from yourself.
ReplyDeleteI used to give in after about two tries and act like I understood. But not anymore, unless I really to make a good impression on the person, I will say "What" all day long until I understand. It gets really awkward sometimes.
