Struggle?

How does one struggle on behalf of others in prayer (Colossians 4:12-13)? What does this look like? How often could this be said of you?

  1. Tim, that is a very thought provoking question, and after pondering on it for a while I think the answer lies in what is most obvious. When our thoughts are consumed with anyone other than ourselves, and when we bring those thoughts before the Lord in prayer, we are "struggling on behalf of others in prayer". I'd like to hear your answer though. Do you think Paul is referring to more than the simple idea of consistently thinking about, and praying for, others?

As far as your second question, sadly this is usually only said of me when someone I love needs something... healing, a job, comfort, etc. I struggle with having that type of mind actually characteristic of me all the time.

  2. Justin, good thoughts. I think I'd say something similar. It seems like it takes a deep sincere love for others coupled with intense godly desires for others coupled with an understanding that we desperately need God to work.

I think of 1 Thessalonians 2 and 3 as an example of this kind of love and intense care for others. In some sense Paul's life is bound up with the well being of the Thessalonians.

I think of the Psalms for the earnest prayer and desperation before God, begging Him to act.

As you said, I think the difficult part is not in comprehending but in the doing. May God, by His grace, make us into the kind of men who will struggle for others in prayer.
